Syria Turkey Earthquake
The New Mosaic is mourning the devastation and loss of life in Syria and Turkey brought upon by two major earthquakes, the strongest to hit the region in modern times. The earthquakes and their aftershocks were felt all across the Mashriq region, as far as Cyrpus and Egypt. Thousands of people have been killed, more infrastructure remains at risk of collapse, and the full scope of the damage is far from conclusive. It breaks our hearts to see the footage and we are keeping Syria and Turkey, all their peoples, and all those affected in our thoughts and prayers. 💔
We support all humanitarian efforts to aid those affected by this disaster. We have shared a link to the Red Cross’ Turkey-Syria Earthquake Appeal in our bio on our profile for anyone seeking to make a donation to assist ongoing emergency response efforts.
We also call attention to the very real ramifications of foreign-imposed sanctions, including the negative effect they have on humanitarian efforts to support those impacted. Syria’s medical sector has already been undermined by such sanctions. As it stands, donations can mostly only be provided to international and foreign organizations - omitting most Syrian organizations on the ground - who then decide how that money is spent and who it goes to. Disasters like these earthquakes are a reminder that humanitarianism should not be politicized and nobody should be prevented from receiving the help they need in the name of geo-politics.
We are hoping for better days in the homeland and will continue to share resources to help assist those affected by this tragedy. If you or a loved one in Syria were personally affected, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your New Mosaic family.
